There are many ways to win a tennis match. During this year’s US Open, USOpen.org will be playing a numbers game, digging deeper into the statistical analysis of select matches to provide highlights, further insights, and data points on player performance.

Flawless Ons Jabeur stormed past Caroline Garcia to reach her first US Open final with a straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-3, under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

In Attack shows the percentage of shots played in attack by both players. Going into the match, Garcia had been one of the most attacking players averaging 32% of shots in attack (championship average: 23%).

However, Jabeur restricted Garcia’s attacking play, reducing her shots in attack to 23%—her lowest of the tournament so far.

Garcia had also been dominant from baseline during this year’s US Open, but Jabeur turned the tables, winning a pivotal 67% of the Baseline Battles.

Baseline Battle calculates the percentage of points won for both players when they are at the baseline.

Jabeur’s low slice backhand was vital in reducing Garcia’s ability to attack. During the match, Jabeur sliced 48% of backhands, which is significantly higher than the tournament average of 13%. This provided Garcia with a different challenge from her previous opponents.

This approach from Jabeur clearly unsettled Garcia's rhythm, who had previously averaged a backhand consistency of 84%. In this match, Garcia’s backhand consistency dropped to 72%, leading to 10 unforced errors and contributing to her losing the majority of Baseline Battles.

Jabeur’s variation proved to be too much for Garcia, and she will be hoping to create the same impact on her opponent in Saturday’s final.
