Opening Day of the 2024 US Open drew the biggest single-day crowd in event history, with 74,641 fans entering the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The day-session crowd of 42,886 was the second-highest day-session attendance in history, while the night-session crowd of 31,775 set an all-time night-session record.
Those who attended were treated to a bevy of amazing matches across all of the courts, from up-and-coming players to the biggest names in the sport.
The reigning queen of Queens, Coco Gauff, had a decisive win in front of the fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium, proving once again why she is the No. 3 seed, able to bounce back from a slow start. A few hundred feet away in Louis Armstrong Stadium, Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen launched a comeback from one set down against American Amanda Anisimova, a perfect example of the excitement that permeates the grounds during the tournament.
Visitors saw two fan-favorites play their final matches in Flushing—Diego Schwartzman and 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem. Thiem faced 2023 semifinalist Ben Shelton in Ashe before he said farewell to the New York crowd on Monday, while Schwartzman fell to fellow veteran Gael Monfils in front of a packed crowd in the Grandstand.
And of course, those who were willing to stay up and stay energized saw Novak Djokovic play his first match of the US Open where he lifted his 24th Grand Slam trophy just 50 weeks ago as he continues his quest for the elusive, unprecedented 25th major title.
While every day is a great day at the US Open, this one was certainly one for the history books.
