WHAT HAPPENED: American Madison Brengle confidently powered past Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska, 6-2, 6-3, to book her spot in the third round at the US Open for the first time since 2015. It was all Brengle from start to finish as the Delaware native focused on keeping the ball off the court while Yastremska struggled to keep it on the rails.
Brengle converted three of four break points in the 34-minute first set while Yastremska poured in 21 unforced errors. The outlook worsened for the World No. 25 when she missed on three break points at 2-4 down in the opener. The No. 19 seed tore the cover off a backhand but sailed it long on the first opportunity; Brengle took charge and hit back-to-back winners on the next two points to hold for 5-2.
The world No. 84 closed out the set with a break.
There were signs of life from Yastremska at times during the second set, but the Ukrainian never could keep it between the lines long enough to avoid going down in straights. Brengle closed out the contest in 75 minutes, as Yastremska’s 43rd unforced error sailed wide.
"She's going to come up with some great shots, I just felt like I just had to stick with it," said Brengle on the court after the match.
WHAT IT MEANS: Brengle joins four other Americans in the third round in the top half of the women’s singles draw and will face unseeded compatriot Shelby Rogers in the third round. The former world No. 35 has only been to the Round of 16 once at a major (2015 Australian Open), and never at the US Open.
Yastremska will have to look inward after a difficult loss to a player ranked far below her. The 20-year-old has the potential to be a force at the top of the game but she lacked conviction and a plan B today against the crafty Brengle. With improved shot selection and consistency, Yastremska could easily be a Top 10 talent.
MATCH POINT: Brengle snaps a five-match losing streak against players ranked inside the Top 50. On the flip side, Yastremska had won 14 of her last 16 against players outside of the Top 50.
