What started as a fairly predictable day of tennis at the 2019 US Open came to a shocking conclusion as 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer fell in a dramatic five-setter in front of a celebrity-filled audience in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The No. 3 seed was defeated by world No. 78 Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who is headed to his first Open semifinal. Earlier in the day, Serena Williams cruised through in her 100th US Open singles win, No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev advanced to his first career semifinal and Elina Svitolina moved on to her first semifinal at Flushing Meadows.
Here is our look at the day's happenings at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center:
The Fall of Federer: With the Arthur Ashe Stadium audience roaring throughout the match, the unseeded Dimitrov, who was one ranked No. 3 in 2017, upset Federer, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Federer, who currently holds the title for most Slam wins, suffered from back and neck issues during the match under the lights.
Medvedev Topples Another: While No. 23 seed Stan Wawrinka showed signs of life with his heavy hitting, it still wasn't enough to stop the hottest player in the game. The Swiss was bounced by Russian Medvedev, 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
"I feel really strange about this match,," Medvedev said after advancing despite struggling with a quad injury. "But I need to say that I'm really happy to be in my major semi."
Serena Celebrates 100: Timed exactly 30 years to the day to Chris Evert's 101st win, Serena roared past No. 18 seed Qiang Wang of China, 6-1, 6-0, to score her 100th US Open singles win.
Yet Another Victory for Svitolina: No. 5 seed Svitolina continued her winning streak over No. 16 Johanna Konta with a straight-sets victory, 6-4, 6-4.
Match of the Day: Even though he had trouble with his left quadriceps, Medvedev bested 2016 champion Wawrinka to advance after four sets. Watch the highlights here.
